Excitement is in the air as we gear up for the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th, 2024.
Here in NYC, we're eagerly anticipating experiencing 90% totality, while our upstate neighbors will witness the full totality.
Did you know that while eclipses occur frequently worldwide, it's rare to experience one so close by and even rarer to have it happen on the same continent?
In fact, the next total solar eclipse visible from North America won't occur until 2033!
Leading up to the eclipse, I've been collecting and creating resources to make this special event more memorable for my students.
Check out my top three solar eclipse online tools below.
After the links, find ready-made resources to maximize your students' understanding of this celestial event.
🗺️ National Solar Observatory Interactive Path of Totality Map:
Use this interactive map to track the path of totality and plan your eclipse viewing experience.
Easy-to-use tool for understanding where and when the eclipse will be visible across the United States.
We will be at 90% totality in our city, and students have enjoyed checking the percent totality for their family members in different regions.
👨💻 Earth Space Lab Solar and Lunar Eclipse Interactive Simulator:
This interactive tool allows students to explore solar and lunar eclipses from different perspectives.
With features like manipulating the moon's position and observing eclipse shadows, it's a great way to deepen understanding.
Remind students to enable the P.O.V. from Earth for easier comparisons.
☀️ NASA Eclipse Observer Interactive Map (Advanced):
Dive into the data of past solar eclipses and compare their characteristics with this NASA tool.
A little more advanced, this tool is great for analyzing trends and patterns in eclipse occurrences.
